At Town Center Family Dentistry, we believe complete dental health cannot be achieved without healthy gums. Our mouths naturally grow bacterial colonies called plaque that must be mechanically removed through daily brushing and flossing. Plaque that is left behind can harden to form tartar, which can be removed by a dental hygienist with the proper tools.

Gingivitis is a common but reversible disease of the gums caused by dental plaque. When your body’s immune system detects the presence of bacteria around your gums, your gums can become red and inflamed. They may also become sensitive and prone to bleeding. Cleaning by a dental hygienist can remove plaque and tartar around your gums and give them the opportunity to recover.

In some patients, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. In periodontitis, the inflammation is so severe that you begin to lose the bone supporting the teeth. Over time, this can lead to your gums becoming infected or your teeth becoming loose. Many patients with periodontitis do not have any symptoms and are at risk of losing otherwise healthy teeth.

To diagnose periodontitis, we use a small dental probe to measure the pockets formed around your teeth by your gums. Deeper pockets indicate the presence of periodontitis, which can be treated through a procedure called scaling and root planing. This deep cleaning procedure allows the hygienist to remove plaque and tartar deep in the gums and stop the bone loss from progressing.
